Sunshine, turquoise seas and palm trees... But above all, a vibrant music scene that has been making the Côte d'Azur dance for decades! From Nice to Saint-Tropez, this region bathed in light is a veritable crossroads of styles, where jazz rubs shoulders with electro, Marseilles rap inspires new generations and the greatest rock legends have left their mark. So, are you ready for a tour of the sounds that make the Riviera tick?
Nice and Juan-les-Pins: A jazz paradise
If the Côte d'Azur were a musical score, it would begin gently with the hushed notes of jazz. Since 1948, Nice Jazz Festival has seen legends such as Louis Armstrong, Ella Fitzgerald and Dizzy Gillespie. A few kilometers further on, Jazz à Juan perpetuates this tradition by welcoming renowned artists to the legendary Pinède Gould stage, with its feet almost in the water. Even today, the Côte d'Azur jazz scene continues to shine with talents such as Thomas Dutronc and Rhoda Scott.
Cannes and Monaco: the electro empire
If jazz is the soul of the Côte d'Azur, electro is its beating heart! Every summer, Plages Électroniques de Cannes transforms the Croisette into a giant dancefloor featuring some of the world's greatest DJs: David Guetta, Charlotte de Witte, DJ Snake, Carl Cox... Even Monaco is not to be outdone, with its ultra-selective electro parties at legendary venues such as Jimmy'z. Here, the party never stops, and the nights are as sparkling as the yachts moored in the port.
Marseille and Toulon: Rap and musical fusion
We're cheating a little, but it's impossible to talk about music on the Côte d'Azur without mentioning Marseille, the capital of French rap. Since the 90s, IAM, the Fonky Family, then SCH and Jul have imposed their flow all over France. But Toulon is not to be outdone: this discreet town is becoming a new musical hub, hosting more and more underground festivals and concerts.
Nice musiques actuelles: Le Frigo 16 and Théâtre Lino Ventura
As well as festivals and major events, Nice also hides a number of more intimate venues that bring music to life all year round. In the 109 complex, le Frigo 16 has established itself as an essential stage, welcoming 1 to 2 concerts a week with national and international artists. Between indie rock, cutting-edge electro and musical discoveries, it's a real landmark for live music fans. Not far from here, Théâtre Lino Ventura brings the city to life with an eclectic program featuring rap, reggae, metal and French chanson.
Saint-Tropez and Nice: Rock and pop in glamorous mode
And what about rock? It too has found refuge under the Mediterranean sun. Johnny Hallyday loved to set the Nice stadium alightwhile the Nîmes Festival, just a stone's throw away, saw a parade of The Rolling Stones, Muse and Depeche Mode. And let's not forget Saint-Tropez, where pop and rock stars regularly set down their suitcases (and guitars) for legendary private parties.
The Côte d'Azur more musical than ever
Between traditions and new trends, big stages and small hidden venues, the Côte d'Azur remains a a land bubbling with music. Whether you're into jazz, electro, rap or rock, there's bound to be a concert waiting for you somewhere between Nice and Saint-Tropez. So, where do we meet for the next live show?
